Care homes for elderly get 1.4m

A housing scheme for the elderly in Wiltshire has been awarded 1.4m by the Department of Health.

The money will go towards building on an existing residential home, Rutland House, in Trowbridge and will provide care for 90 people.

The project aims to offer support to help older people and those with dementia to live independently.

The housing will also include flats with double bedrooms so that couples can be housed together.

John Thompson, of Wiltshire county council, said: "The funding from the Department of Health is hugely significant because it gives a stamp of approval to our approach to providing the best extra care we can and provide people with a life rather than a service."

It is hoped that the building will be completed by 2010 and fully occupied by 2011.
