Honda's four-month break to begin

Honda production line
Honda is cutting back production in the UK and in Japan

Honda is to close its UK base for four months after Friday's shifts are over.

Workers at the carmaker's Swindon plant are to receive full basic pay for the first two months and 60% for the rest of the closure, said a spokesman.

The lengthened shutdown was announced earlier in the month by the firm, which has suffered an extended sales slump.

However Honda has said it is committed to retaining the Swindon workforce until the autumn, when the Jazz model is due to go into production.

The carmaker said in November that the plant would be shut during February and March.

A two-month extension to the shutdown was announced earlier this month.

Honda has said there are no plans for redundancies and that it intends to "safeguard employment" for those workers who want to stay at the company.
