Parades mark end of marching season
Thousands of people will take part in parades
Thousands of people will take part in parades
Thousands of people have taken part in Royal Black Institution processions throughout Northern Ireland.

Several of Saturday's parades had restrictions placed on them by the Parades Commission.

The demonstrations were the last major event of the loyal orders' marching season.

The Belfast districts held their demonstration in Carrickfergus in County Antrim.

Feeder parades

Demonstrations also took place in counties Tyrone, Londonderry, Down and Armagh.

Our membership always conduct themselves in a manner which should not be seen by others as contentious

Billy Logan, Sovereign Grand Master

Sinn Fein objected to one of the feeder parades passing by the mainly nationalist Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

However, the parade past the Ardoyne shops passed off peacefully.

The Sovereign Grand Master of the institution, Billy Logan, said it was regrettable that attempts were made to have this section of their walk banned.

He said: "The fact is that our membership always conduct themselves in a manner which should not be seen by others as contentious.

"However, if people have an agenda which they wish to do and voice a protest, then that is their right.

No opposition

"But they should have respect for other people as the Black Institution have for them."

A nationalist residents' group in Londonderry said they would not oppose a parade by the Royal Black Institution in the city.

The move came after talks hosted by the City Centre Initiative group in the city in June between the Royal Black organisation and the Bogside Residents' Association.

The parade in the city passed off without incident.

The Royal Black Institution is one of the main loyal orders in Northern Ireland which holds traditional marches during the summer months.
