Troubles report is outlined to PM

Prime Minister Gordon Brown
The meeting took place at Downing Street

The Consultative Group on the Past has outlined the findings of its forthcoming report to the prime minister.

Co-chairmen Lord Eames and Denis Bradley met Gordon Brown ahead of the report's publication next week.

Lord Eames said after the meeting they had "very constructive discussions".

"We talked about the ideas we hope to put forward and how we see these contributing to healing wounds and pointing the way forward," he said.

"We thought it was important to brief him in view of the report's publication next week."

Mr Bradley said he and Lord Eames appreciated that although Mr Brown was "deeply engaged with the problems of the economy, he gave us sufficient time to discuss the content of our report."

Legacy

The Consultative Group on the Past was established to look at how to deal with the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles.

One of the key recommendations is expected to be the creation of a commission to investigate unsolved murders during the Troubles.

However, it has denied speculation they will propose offering any form of amnesty to paramilitaries who engage with the process.
