Children's Secretary Ed Balls has criticised Conservative proposals to introduce tax breaks for married couples as "hugely expensive and unfair".
His words in a Sunday newspaper come as Labour prepares to unveil what it calls a series of family-friendly policies, including more help for fathers and grandparents.
