An investigation has been launched after bread rolls bought from an Asda supermarket were found to contain glass fragments.

The glass was found in packets of New Scotch Rolls sold to two customers at the store in St James' Retail Park, Dumbarton, on Saturday.

Asda said the customers raised concerns with the store and a further 10 customers have now responded to a product recall notice.

A spokeswoman for the store said a "processing fault" was to blame and six-pack and "16 for the price of 12" packs of New Scotch Rolls, with a best before stamp of 3 June, were affected.

No other products that we've produced in the Dumbarton store or in any other Asda store have been affected

She said: "If you have purchased any of these products please do not eat them and return them to the Dumbarton store for a full refund.

"Ten customers returned packs to the store today (Sunday). An investigation is under way but the cause is definitely not malicious.

"That is not a line of inquiry. Our technical people are now in and we hope to find out within a couple of days how it happened."

Earlier, two customers returned packs of rolls that had contained glass.

About 130 packs of the rolls which contained glass were sold on Saturday morning at the Asda store on Glasgow Road.

The remaining packs on the shelf were removed from sale and destroyed after the fault was discovered.

The spokeswoman said: "No other products that we've produced in the Dumbarton store or in any other Asda store have been affected.

"We have launched an investigation to find out how it could have happened."
