Safety summit for cockle fishery

Safety advice is to be issued to cocklers using the Solway
Safety advice is to be handed out to fishermen operating in the recently reopened Solway Firth.

There have been two rescue operations since a new licensing system was launched for the cockle fishery.

Investigations are ongoing into fears the craft involved might have been linked to illegal cockle fishing.

The Solway Shellfish Management Association (SSMA) has scheduled a meeting to underline safety measures that should be taken in the area.

Five fishermen had to be rescued from the Solway at the weekend and, in another incident, an apparently abandoned vessel was recovered.

Fisheries officer for the SSMA, Steven Alexander, said initial problems were to be expected but stressed that health and safety were the prime concerns.

"Hopefully these are just teething incidents but we will be investigating further with the relevant bodies," he said.

"It is a new fishery that has just been newly formed so we will need to address these problems as we find them."
