New radar for Highlands airport
Inverness Airport
The new system will allow the airport to handle more flights
Inverness Airport is to get its own radar control room and end its reliance on cover provided by two RAF stations in Moray.

Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) said it expected to have seven days a week coverage by next summer.

A contract has been awarded to install a radar control room at the airport.

Radar cover at Inverness is provided by National Air Traffic Services and Ministry of Defence (MoD) operators at RAF Kinloss and RAF Lossiemouth.

Noise reduction

The first phase of the project will see data fed into the new control room at Inverness air traffic control tower, which will be staffed by four new radar controllers.

They are presently undergoing training.

The second phase will see the airport acquire its own radar head at the airport.

HIAL said in-house cover seven days a week will allow them to reduce delays to inbound aircraft and increase the number of aircraft movements the airport can handle in an hour.

It will also allow new approach procedures to reduce noise and cut down on fuel burn by aircraft as they land at Inverness.
