Flights delayed for staff breaks
Stornoway Airport
HIAL say the breaks help it meet working time rules
Flights from Stornoway are being delayed so air traffic controllers can take breaks.

Staff shortages mean aircraft cannot take off or land between 0830-0900 and 1700-1730 GMT.

Western Isles MSP Alasdair Morrison has raised the issue after his flight on Tuesday morning was delayed.

Operator Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) said the breaks were required so it could meet working time regulations and allow for training.

HIAL said the timings of the shutdowns had been set to minimise disruption to scheduled flights.

A spokesman said: "It is not unusual for an airport to introduce a measure like this to accommodate short-term operational requirements and normal air traffic services will be reinstated at Stornoway as soon as practicable.

"Our priority is, of course, to avoid disruption to scheduled air services and passengers travelling on these, although short delays may be unavoidable due to operational circumstances."

Strict rules

Mr Morrison said it was "ludicrous and unacceptable" that there was not adequate cover.

John Levesley, spokesman for the Guild of Air Traffic Control Officers (Gatco), said the profession had seen a large number of retirals, which was causing staff shortages across the board.

He also said there were strict rules on regular staff breaks.

On the Stornoway situation, he said: "If they are short of controllers up there with people retiring and resigning then they are having to introduce breaks to comply with the Civil Aviation Authority."
