World status hope for battlefield

Culloden effectively ended the Jacobite rebellion
The site of the last great battle on British soil is to be considered for World Heritage status.

The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) said it intends to apply to Unesco for the designation for Culloden Battlefield, near Inverness.

The battle took place on 16 April, 1746 and effectively ended Jacobite hopes of restoring the exiled Stuart dynasty to the throne of Britain.

If successful, the site would join the Great Wall of China on the list.

In the UK, Stonehenge and the island of St Kilda have World Heritage status.

The Antonine Wall - which runs 37 miles from Bo'ness, near Falkirk, to Old Kilpatrick in West Dunbartonshire - was nominated for the classification in January.
