'Fairy cakes' fee to new festival

Home baking could be accepted as entry to a new film festival involving Oscar winners Tilda Swinton and Joel Coen.

The event is to be held in the Ballerina Ballroom, a Victorian building in Nairn town centre.

Ms Swinton, who won best supporting actress this year for her role in the film Michael Clayton, has a home with her family in the Highlands town.

The festival organisers said entry fee could be �3, "unless you bring a tray of fairy cakes".

Called the Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams, the event will be held on 15-23 August.

Nairn has been building a reputation as an arts venue and already hosts book and international jazz festivals.

Ms Swinton is funding the event, which has also been backed by arts group Hi-Arts.

Others involved in the project include Scottish artist and writer John Byrne, former Edinburgh Film Festival director Mark Cousins and Oscar-winning writer/director Mr Coen.

Ms Swinton is in Burn After Reading - a new film by Mr Coen and his brother Ethan, which also stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

The actress played the White Witch in the film The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
