A strike threat to American billionaire Donald Trump's planned visit to his mother's home on the Isle of Lewis on Monday has been lifted.

The property tycoon plans to visit Stornoway before giving evidence at a public hearing about his proposed 1bn golf resort in Aberdeenshire.

Proposed industrial action by airport firefighters raised the prospect of his jet being unable to land at Stornoway.

But the airport operators said the strike has now been suspended.

Further talks will take place between the company, Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, and the Unite trade union.

Further discussions

A spokesman for HIAL, which operates 10 airports including Stornoway, said: "The union has agreed to suspend the action planned for 9 June to allow further discussions to take place.

"We welcome this move which will allow air traffic to operate as normal next Monday.

"We are now liaising with the union to identify suitable dates to get round the table again."

Mr Trump will give evidence at the Public Local Inquiry, which was ordered by Scottish ministers after Aberdeenshire Council rejected plans for his golf development at Menie Estate.

Environmental groups and local campaigners have criticised the scheme, while many leading business figures have pledged their support.

Mr Trump's late mother, Mary MacLeod Trump, was born on Lewis before emigrating to the US in the 1930s.

She died in August 2000 at the age of 88.
