Aberdeen City Council needs to make the savings next year

Budget cuts worth about �30m for next year have been revealed by Aberdeen City Council.

A significant amount of savings will come from staff cuts, with 300-400 jobs to go. The council said it hoped all would be voluntary redundancies.

The proposals include a reduction in teaching staff and a cut in personal carers and social work areas.

A reduction in one-to-one support for pupils in special schools and some swimming pool closures are planned.

Having talks

The council's deputy leader, Kevin Stewart of the SNP, gave details of the impact on jobs on Wednesday evening.

He said library, arts and museum employees were also among the staff due to be hit by the cutbacks, with proposals to close some libraries and Aberdeen's Tollbooth Museum.

The voluntary sector is also facing cuts and the council said it was having talks with voluntary groups about the impact on them.

Council leaders will also ask the Scottish Government for �10m to pay for the redundancies.

The budget decisions are expected to be made by Christmas.
