Council 'is not as bad as feared'

Sue Bruce
Ms Bruce was previously chief executive of East Dunbartonshire

The new chief executive of Aberdeen City Council has insisted that its problems are not as bad as she had first feared.

Sue Bruce, who took over the job last week, has been speaking of her role for the first time.

She said child protection would be one of her top priorities and that she only took the job because of the challenges involved.

Ms Bruce previously held the same post at East Dunbartonshire Council.

She said: "I think that the challenges that Aberdeen City Council face have all been faced by other councils at some point.

"I see this as an advancement for me, it's a bigger council, it's a prestigious post."

The new chief executive replaced Douglas Paterson, who announced in May he was taking early retirement.
