More than 200 drivers were caught in the campaign

Police caught more than 200 drivers travelling above the limit in the space of 24 hours on the region's roads.

Another 29 motorists were found not to be wearing seatbelts in the campaign which ran from 24-25 April.

A police spokesman said the force was "disappointed" by the results and would continue to enforce speed limits on a day to day basis.

Sgt Ian Fraser, of the road safety unit, expressed concern at the outcome of the campaign which was part of national speeding and seatbelt day.

"I am disappointed in the figures due to the fact that speeding and failing to wear a seat belt are both extremely dangerous and could potentially lead to deaths on our roads," he said.

One driver was caught doing an average of 130mph over a 4.7 mile stretch of the A74(M).

Another reached speeds of 90mph on the A75 with two front tyres which were found to be defective.

"These laws are there for a reason, which is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads," said Sgt Fraser.
