Rubbish scheme relaunch shelved
Side waste
The controversial guidelines were shelved by councillors
Plans to relaunch a controversial policy on kerbside rubbish collections in Dumfries and Galloway have been shelved.

Councillors opposed bringing back the household refuse strategy in February amid fears of another public backlash.

The guidelines were suspended just days after being introduced in November.

Wheelie bins were not emptied if their lids were not shut properly and extra waste had to be placed in bags supplied by the council at 50p a time.

Chairman of the combined services committee Sean Marshall admitted that they got it wrong.

He said a new strategy was now planned to promote waste reduction.

"We are out to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill," Mr Marshall said.

"We are big enough, as both officers and members, when we get it wrong to take a step back and actually make sure that the process that we do put in place is something that can fit the needs of the people in Dumfries and Galloway."

The report on kerbside collection went before the committee on Tuesday.
