Candidates in new council contest
Dumfries and Galloway Council
The council elections take place over new larger wards
More than 160 candidates have thrown their hats in the ring for places on Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway councils.

In Dumfries and Galloway 91 candidates have put themselves forward for election to the 47 seats.

While in the Borders a total of 72 people will fight it out for 34 places in the chamber at Newtown St Boswells.

Proportional representation is being used for the first time, with three or four councillors for new larger wards.

In Dumfries and Galloway the Conservatives is fielding the largest number of candidates with 24 across the 13 wards.

Labour is putting forward 21 potential councillors, the SNP 13 and the Lib Dems 11.

There are also 18 independents, three Greens and one from the UK Independence Party.

Largest number

In the Borders the largest number of candidates are independent with a total of 19.

No other party or group could gain overall control of the council with the Tories and Lib Dems fielding 14 candidates each.

The SNP has 11 candidates, the Borders Party seven, there are three Greens, two Labour candidates and one each for the Scottish Socialist Party and Solidarity.

Council elections are held on the same day as the Scottish Parliament poll vote on 3 May.
