Many south of Scotland schools set to stay closed

Dumfries High School is among the sites shut again on Wednesday

Dozens of schools across southern Scotland are set to stay shut for a second day due to snow and ice.

All 74 primary and secondary sites in the Scottish Borders will be closed to pupils for a second day on Wednesday.

A large number of schools in nearby Dumfries and Galloway will also remain shut due to the bad weather.

Safety assessments were carried out across both regions before decisions were reached on how many premises would be safe to reopen to pupils.

Councils in the regions have advised parents to check their websites and local media for the latest updates on the closure situation.

Scottish Borders Council announced at the weekend that its schools would not reopen on Tuesday.

It has now confirmed they will all remain shut on Wednesday.

Dumfries and Galloway Council had intended to open some schools on Tuesday but later decided to shut them all due to safety concerns.

Head teachers have now examined each individual site and a large number will remain shut on Wednesday.
