Thousands of tonnes of salt were used during freezing conditions

Freezing conditions and heavy snowfalls have cost two south of Scotland councils more than £1.6m. Scottish Borders Council said it had spent an extra £1.16m on its winter clear-up operations. Neighbouring Dumfries and Galloway Council has estimated its costs at about £500,000. Roads maintenance services were in almost constant operation across the two regions from 19 December to 12 January. The Scottish Borders suffered serious snowfalls which blocked many routes and shut all its schools. It is now preparing a bid for Bellwin funding to meet its costs in dealing with the situation.
