New access to patients' records

Out-of-hours staff will not have full access to GP records
Health chiefs in Tayside are aiming to improve out-of-hours GP services through a new information system.

It will give nurses and doctors immediate access to patient information held at their GP surgery for those calling out-of-hours.

The nationwide Emergency Care Summary system aims to alert health staff to any allergies the patient may have or medication they are currently taking.

Patients can refuse to let out-of-hours staff look at their summaries.

NHS Tayside Primary Care Services general manager Susan Ross said: "The benefits of the new system to our patients are quite significant.

"This is actually something for which patients have been asking for some time and so we are really pleased NHS Tayside is now in a position to provide this service."

She added: "We believe the majority of patients will participate because it will speed up access to records and, ultimately, improve their out-of-hours care."

Out-of-hours staff will not be able to see patients' full GP records.
