Council strike: Services hit

Unison and Unite prepare to strike after rejecting a below inflation pay rise

Many council workers across Wales are taking part in a two-day strike, which began on Wednesday.

Here is an outline of how the action is affecting services across Wales' 22 local authorities and links to council websites, where more detailed information can be obtained.

The council's headquarters in Llangefni and other buildings will be closed. All island libraries and the records office and Oriel Ynys Mon will also close. Some schools will also be closed.

All buildings will be closed to the public, including the civic centre, leisure centres and the majority of its schools. The council says adult education learning action centres, Brynmawr cinema, some grounds and youth centres will also be closed.

There will be disruption to its services but the council says it is working with trade unions to ensure vulnerable residents remain protected.

Refuse collections are unaffected. Most libraries will be closed although Blaengarw and Pontycymmmer branches remain open. All leisure centres and pools are closed but the Grand Pavilion, Bryngarw House and the Berwyn Centre will remain open. Most parks will be closed but Byngarw Park is partly open. A list of Bridgend school closures and emergency contact numbers are on the council website.

All council offices and switchboards will be closed but there is a a 24-hour contact number in operation for emergencies. The authority says it is trying to ensure key services will be maintained. Parents are advised to seek clarification directly from schools about whether they are open or not.

The council says it anticipates County Hall, City Hall and Wilcox House will remain open. It also says it hopes to keep essential adults and children's services operating, although it is likely social work teams will not be operating and some centres will close. All play centres will be closed, leisure centres will mostly be open as normal (Llanishen and Channel View will be partially open).

Community halls will stay open and parks, but with a reduced service in some locations. There will be some library closures. Cardiff's New Theatre and St David's Hall will be open but there will be reduced box office operations. Rubbish collections will operate, but the council warns there may be disruption. Thirteen schools will be closed and 21 partially closed.

Services will be disrupted but emergency cover will be provided from home care and those with learning disabilities and children, says the council. Refuse collections will not take place. Amman Valley Leisure Centre and Llandovery swimming pool will be shut. Cinemas and theatres in Carmarthen, Llanelli and Ammanford will also be closed, as will regional libraries in those towns. Forty two schools will be closed.

Waiting for a response.

The council says it is difficult to predict to what extent services will be hit but every effort is being made to ensure critical services are maintained. Refuse collections in Llanddulas, Old Colwyn, Colwyn Bay and Mochdre will be hit, as will recycling collections in Deganwy, Llanrhos, Penrhyn Bay and parts of Llandudno. Five schools will be closed.

The council says all cash offices and one stop shops will be closed, as will some libraries and day care centres. Fifteen schools will be closed.

Many council buildings and offices will close but there will be a limited staff at County Hall in Mold to handle emergencies. Rubbish and recycling collections due will not take place, although the county's eight recycling parks will be open as normal. Parents will be notified by head teachers as to whether individual schools will be open.

The council says there will be no waste or recycling collections on the strike days nor will council recycling centres and landfill sites be open. Three schools will be closed, and five more partially closed.

The authority says it is working hard to keep any disruption to a minimum, and unions have agreed to support a number of key services. The public are advised to check in advance whether libraries and leisure centres are open. Civic buildings are expected to be open but may not be fully manned. Individual schools will be advising parents whether they are open.

The authority says it is worked with the unions to ensure that essential services continue and assistance for vulnerable people is not affected. One Stop shops in Monmouth and Abergavenny will shut and Chepstow Leisure Centre will be closed on Thursday afternoon. Eleven schools are to be closed.

Most primary schools and some secondary schools will be closed, leisure facilities and refuse and recycling collections will be disrupted and all council offices will be closed. The council says most older and disabled people receiving home or person care services will not be affected. The theatres and arts centres will also be closed as well as some leisure centres and swimming pools.

The council says trade unions have agreed exemptions for some employees to ensure the continuation of some services, however there will inevitably be some disruption to services. Twenty six schools will be closed and eight partially closed.

The council says refuse collections which are likely to be cancelled both days. Portfield Special School in Haverfordwest which caters for children and young people with severe disabilities is the only school closure, but there may be restrictions on services in some primary schools. The council says individuals schools will advise parents beforehand. Customer service centres in Haverfordwest, Fishguard, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock are likely to be closed. Haverfordwest Airport will be closed.

The council says services face disruption during the two-day strike, but adds it is difficult to predict the full impact of the action. Emergency services will continue with union co-operation, it says. Closed schools will be Brecon High School, Builth Wells High School, and Crickhowell Primary School (from noon both days).

A list of school closures in Rhondda Cynon Taff is available on the council's website

The council says in general it will be operating an emergency-only service over the two days. Libraries will be closed, as will Penlan leisure centre. Both the Civic Centre and Guildhall will be closed. A large number of school closures are listed on the council website.

Services will be "drastically reduced" on both days, according to the council. Refuse and black box collections should not be affected but the council warns there may be a problem with calling to report a missed collection due to office staff being on strike. All libraries will be closed along with a number of other centres. A list of school closures is on the council website.

The council says eight schools will be closed and seven partially closed. Council offices will be largely closed, and the public are advised to check on the up-to-date position on libraries and council leisure centres. Refuse and recycling collections will be severely disrupted.

The main council switchboard will be closed along with main reception areas and offices, cash and benefits offices, country parks. depots. Housing estate offices, leisure centres, libraries, museums, People's Market multi-storey car park, and the tourist information centre will be shut. There will be no household refuse collections.
