Sculpture tribute to 'rebel prince'
![]() Owain Glyndwr was a key figure in Welsh history
A model of a new statue of the rebel prince who ruled Wales 600 years ago has been unveiled in the Gwynedd village where he held his court.
Once cast, Owain Glyndwr's statue will be the centrepiece of a memorial garden in the grounds of Pennal Church near Machynlleth.
The 4ft high sculpture will be cast in bronze and become the centrepiece of a memorial garden in the church grounds. It coincides with a new campaign currently under way to have Glyndwr's vision of an independent Wales displayed in the village in 2006. The Pennal Letter sent to the French king in 1406 - in which Glyndwr begs for help in his rebellion against the English - made it as far as nearby Aberystwyth this summer. The letter was never answered but remained in the French national archive. It is one of very few surviving examples of his handwriting and includes a copy of his seal. It was drafted after Glyndwr was crowned Prince of Wales at Pennal and held a meeting of the first Welsh Parliament. But following a six month exhibition, the letter is now on its way back to Paris after security worries prevented it returning to the village where it was written.
