Warning as drugs kill bodybuilder

The mother of a three-times Mr Wales who died from testosterone misuse has warned bodybuilders that muscle- boosting drugs could kill them.

Andrew Humphreys, aged 31, died because the testosterone tablets which he had taken for years had enlarged his heart along with other muscles, an inquest in Swansea heard.

His mother, Moira Humphreys, said her son was the picture of health but that the internal effects of the drugs had been invisible.

She said that if others realised the dangers of misusing testosterone, then his death would not have been in vain.

Found dead on floor

Mr Humphreys had dedicated his life to bodybuilding and had stayed single and jobless so he could concentrate on the sport.

His dedication brought him the Mr Wales title in 1993, 1994 and 1996. On one occasion he beat the television gladiator Hawk in a bodybuilding contest.

The Swansea and Gower coroner, Richard Morgan, heard how Mr Humphreys was found dead on the living room floor at his home in Siloh Road, Landore, Swansea, on March 27.

Pathologist Dr Susan Williams said death was due to an enlarged heart caused by testosterone misuse.

The coroner recorded a verdict of misadventure.
