Jobs to go as bed firm closes
Westminster Bedsteads factory in Wrexham
The firm said trends were moving away from pine and softwood beds
A bed manufacturer in Wrexham has announced it plans to close with the loss of all 62 jobs.

Production at Westminster Bedsteads will be moved from north Wales to the Far East, the company announced on Tuesday.

The company, part of the Silentnight Group, said the market had "fallen victim" to cheaper foreign imports.

A consultation period with the company's workers is under way before the planned closedown this autumn.

Silentnight Group Chief Executive Nino Allenza said:"In spite of our best efforts Westminster Bedsteads is no longer competitive in this global economy.

"At the same time, market trends have moved away from pine and softwood products, the mainstay of besteads manufactured at our Wrexham site".

Mr Allenza said the company already sources most of its bedroom designs from the Far East .

Westminster Bedsteads was bought by the Silentnight Group in 1988, and the plant currently produced a-third of the group's bedstead designs.
