Campaigners say there is no alternative parking

Parking in the town will remain free, pending a review later in the year.

Elsewhere in the county, charges are to be introduced at Denbigh's multi-storey car park - with the exception of the town's Community College students, who can still park there for free.

Traders and residents in Corwen held demonstrations at plans to introduce a 40p an hour charge in the town.

The new charges were introduced across the county earlier this year, with a few exceptions which included Corwen and the multi-storey in Denbigh.

Corwen residents objected because they claimed there was no free alternative in the town.

Many of the town's houses are alongside the A5, and residents claimed they could not even park outside their homes to escape the charges - because it would block the main road.

In March campaigners brought the main road to a standstill during a protest when about 80 cars parked on both sides of the A5 at its narrowest point in the town.

Denbighshire County Council confirmed on Wednesday the cabinet had voted not to charge at the Green Lane, Pavilion and Station car parks in Corwen, for the time being.

Charges are to be enforced elsewhere in the county though, including Denbigh's multi-storey car park.

Students in the town will be allowed to park for free for a six-month trial period.

It is thought Denbighshire's new parking fees will generate an extra �125,000 for council services.
