Luxury flat plans withdrawn

A property developer withdrew plans for a controversial holiday flat complex just hours before it was due to go before Anglesey planners.

More than 300 people signed a petition opposing the 11m luxury complex at the Bryn Tirion hotel at Red Wharf Bay.

Developer John Wood said he withdrew his plans because council officials had asked for further amendments just 24 hours before Wednesday's meeting.

But Mr Wood said he would submit revised plans at a later date.

The plan had been recommended for refusal on various grounds including scale, height and design.

A spokesman for Mr Wood said the application had been in the system for 10 months and by contacting him just 24 hours before the meeting the council had not given him enough time to change the application.

A bid for the decision to be deferred had been refused by the council and it was decided to withdraw the application.

"It will be re-submitted with a reduced overall mass," the spokesman added.

There is some relief at the fact he has seen logic in withdrawing these plans, but we will remain vigilant about the next step

One of those opposed to the scheme is local resident Jack Owen. He is now looking to the future.

"There is some relief at the fact he has seen logic in withdrawing these plans, but we will remain vigilant about the next step," he said.

The investment company behind the plans, Red Wharf Bay Group, which includes Mr Wood, had pledged to reinvest some of the profits generated by the scheme into other local initiatives on the island, including more affordable housing for local homebuyers.

The Red Wharf Point apartments were to be sold on a "reside and let" principle, with residents able to stay there for six weeks a year and rent out the flats the rest of the time.

Mr Wood said when the plans were submitted last year that the complex would attract a "high calibre of holidaymaker," which would help the local economy.
