Fire tackled at former steelworks
Corus, South Wales
The fire broke out in a building under demolition

Fire fighters are tackling a blaze at a former steelworks in Ebbw Vale.

A large quantity of waste oil is on fire in a building at the former Corus works.

Fire crews were called to the scene at about 1010 BST on Wednesday.

The fire is contained in the Number Five Stand, a building that housed metal rollers used to flatten steel strips, which was under demolition.

Three workers and supervisor are believed to have been on-site but they were accounted for and unhurt.

Four fire engines and two water appliances are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Corus has said that no controlled burning had been taking place.

The site is no longer in operation after closing in July 2002 and is in the process of being demolished.

It was shut as part of a major restructuring by Corus, under which 350 workers moved to the Netherlands or other plants in the UK.

Demolition of the plant began about a month after closure.
