To the Hon Mr RM, of Panmure, on his high Phaeton

Thou fool, in thy Phaeton towering, Art proud when that Phaeton's prais'd? 'Tis the pride of a Thief's exhibition When higher his pillory's rais'd.

New-fangledly powered by electricity, the Glasgow Underground was opened on this day in 1896. So enviably successful was the city's public transport system, that the Mayor of Chicago subsequently poached the man responsible to run the Mass Transit Authority in the 'windy city'. Before those new carriages rattled underground horse drawn carriages clattered over ground. Phaetons were somewhat racy open coaches with big, flashy wheels - the "Chelsea Tractors" of Burns’s day.
