School Report 2007

For youngsters from Poltair School in St Austell, Thursday 22 March was a special day.

Searching for the stories

They changed their classroom into a newsroom as part of the BBC's School Report programme.

At 9am the youngsters held their news meeting. They decided which news and sport stories they should report on, under the watchful eye of their appointed news editor, Emily.

Before long the young journalists were busy researching the newspapers, radio stations, and the internet to find out which news stories would be the most interesting to cover.

Checking the scripts

Once the stories were agreed, the reporters got to work on their scripts.

During the morning they received visits from other members of the media, who were keen to cover the day. The St Austell Voice and BBC Spotlight came along to report on the day, and many of the youngsters were interviewed about their roles.

At midday the journalists headed to the recording studio at the school. This is the home of Poltair's Inferno Radio, which broadcasts to the school during morning and lunchtime breaks.

Between midday and 1pm the young journalists practiced their scripts, changed stories, running orders, and even news presenters, until they were happy with the final running order.

We're on the air!

After a quick lunch it was time for one last read through, and to make sure the newsreaders, sports, weather and surfing reporters were all in place.

Well done to all the youngsters involved in the day. This has been the first year of the BBC's School Report, and all the students, and teachers agree, that it should become an annual event for all schools.
