Saturday's event at Mounts Bay was the first event of the season that Cadgwith attended and although the Scillies Men's B crew was not out in full strength, a combination of that crew, and this years Veterans crew, was used in the race. The two members of the Scillies Men's B crew were Jeb (at number 4) and me (at number 2). The crew was placed in the first heat and contended that heat's third place spot with Teignmouth and Coverack. Coverack were rowed through on the second leg with the same being done to Teignmouth on the third. This was particularly difficult given the strong head wind on the last leg.

The crew placed fifth overall once the times of the second heat had been taken into account. The crew was fairly satisfied with the race, especially the use of a longer stroke, to row through the aforementioned crews. Training on Tuesday was as usual with the Gig clubs rowing machines being used for 3000 metres, 500 metres and one minute rows. Experimentation with different stroke rates continues to be used as well as the rowing machine slides, which we feel give an improved workout to the lower limbs. Training on Thursday saw an intense four hour session in the 'Buller', which was launched from Mullion Harbour. The session was a good mock up of the sort of rowing that takes place during the Scillies weekend. The row included training for rowing out to the start line, waiting to be called to the line, starts, timed races and stamina sessions in both rough and flat water. The crew was worn out after the session but felt that it was a worthwhile effort, as it identified points for improvement. These included the technique used on the end of the stroke and the benefit of tying in feet to the footrests. More from Charlie soon. |
