Wristcutters: A Love Story

Interviewed by Anna Smith

“I believe I love the strange world. I feel well suited for projects that have a special kind of hyper-something. ”

Since catching Heath Ledger's eye in A Knight's Tale, Shannyn Sossamon has mixed small parts in big movies with leading roles in quirky indies. The latest, Wristcutters: A Love Story is a darkly comical drama set in a limbo for suicide victims.

You've been in some quite edgy, dark films, like The Rules of Attraction, and now Wristcutters: A Love Story. Do projects like this particularly appeal to you?

Well you've just named two of my favourites, that's for sure (and A Knight's Tale of course!). Yes, I believe I love the strange world. I feel well suited for projects that have a special kind of hyper-something. However that doesn't mean I wouldn't do something softer and more accessible.

Wristcutters: A Love StoryHow would you describe the film Wristcutters: A Love Story?

It is a special story of love and friendship that is set in the afterlife of suicide victims.

Did anything surprise you as you read through the script?

The ending did.

Was it difficult making a movie set in a world where it's impossible to smile?

Yes, absolutely. Especially when you have to feel fondness, flirtation, and affection for the other characters in the story.

Do you believe in an afterlife?

Of course.

Do you have any ideas about what it'd be like?

Oh dear no!

What do you think about criticisms from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, who claim that the film is 'making fun' of suicide?

I completely understand it from a human nature standpoint. When one is passionate about a cause, it means the world to them, and when it doesn't mean the world to others as much then they get very upset. I am 100% confident that the film's focal point isn't to 'make fun' of suicide.

The Wristcutters story has been compared to the Wizard of Oz - unusual characters stranded in a strange world looking for the people in charge - would you say there was a similarity?

I never thought of it while we were shooting. When I first heard that I didn't disagree yet I didn't dwell on the comparison. It is a compliment.

What was the biggest challenge for you during filming?

The heat, heat, heat, heat, heat!

Wristcutters: A Love Story

How did you get along with Patrick Fugit? Is he as sweet as he seems?

Oh yes M'am he is! A damn doll. I adore him.

What kind of reaction have you had from audiences who've seen the movie?

Anyone that has approached me has 100% loved it. People seem to be getting it. I'm glad. Goran (the writer/director) deserves it. He's a great man.

If you had the choice between an indie script you loved, and a role as the next Bond girl, which would you choose?

The Bond girl. I need the exposure. I would have an absolute blast as a Bond girl. Plus, it would allow me to do as many independent films as I loved, right?

Wristcutters: A Love Story opens in UK cinemas on Friday 23rd November 2007.
