EP - Thee JeneratorsBy Tom Girard Continuing their evolution with this three track EP from early 2006, Thee Jenerators continue to develop their retro rock sound. Having noticeably developed their sound since their ultra speedy 'Jenerator X' debut album, Thee Jenerators first EP for Biff!Bang!Pow! Records presents the same energy across 3 more prime pieces of guitar rock. Slowing the pace down on this release has not effected the records energy as I thought it might. Whereas all the tracks on 'Jenerator X' clocked in at well under three minutes, here two break that barrier but continue to have the desired effect of modern mod rock. Basing their style very much on the 1960’s and 70’s guitar rock sound, with an added hint of what made 90’s British guitar rock what it was, the band have added an extra layer to their sound with the inclusion of a saxophone or two. This new sound is displayed from the off in the EPs title track as the guitar, drums and bass form the basis before the sax sneaks in from behind and is then given a chance to shine in short solo. The inclusion of the brass instrument leads to an even more retro feel to the music, though it still remains clearly a product of today, something the label that released the record pride themselves on delivering. The less punky attitude of ‘Who the Hell is Frank Wilson?’ does present the slight let down that the sound is less obvious get on your feet and dance music, however this is remedied by its developed style which will keep anyone into straight forward guitar music happy as it retains the same no frills approach while still remaining an interesting listen. As a precursor to another full length release this EP is a promising development and shows a band clearly not satisfied with simply standing still and who are constantly developing their sound while remaining firmly planted in the field that ‘brought them to the dance’, as it were, that being good firm slices of modish guitar rock. last updated: 14/10/2008 at 11:29 You are in: Guernsey > Unsigned Bands > CD Reviews > Who the Hell is Frank Wilson?
