Thee Jenerators debut at the De La RueBy Tom Girard Thee Jenerators got warmed up for their forthcoming shows by playing at the Thomas De La Rue on 19 April 2008. Indescribable is about the only way to describe the music of Thee Jenerators… Ok, so a contradiction isn't the best way the start a review, I'll try again… ![]() Mark Le Gallez. If you take a dash of the 1950's, a pinch of 60's, a splash of the 70's, garnish with something of the last two and half decades and throw it in a musical blender, you might end up with something a bit like Thee Jenerators. From rock 'n' roll and rockabilly through mod, punk and ska Mark Le Gallez and his troupe of musicians really know how to get a room moving, and that's just what they did tonight at the De La Rue… eventually. Making their first appearance at the pub at the bottom of the Pollet, Thee Jenerators were starting a series of shows that will culminate in playing the main stage of the Guernsey Live festival and playing on the Albert Pier on Liberation Day. ![]() Steven Lynch. Things didn't get off to the best start tonight though as they gave those in the De La Rue a preview of their set for the festival at Victoria Avenue which mixed up material spanning the bands two albums and included a few new tracks too. Unfortunately the pub was still only about half full and those who were there seemed content to stand near the back and simply watch. This, combined with some sound issues, clearly had an effect on the band as they seemed to be having trouble getting into the swing of things and the lack of crowd reaction just seemed to exacerbate their problems. ![]() Nick Dodd. After a brief break though Thee Jenerators seemed to be back on home turf picking songs as they went along and, with the pub now filling nicely, started to get a few dancing, including this reviewer. This continued as the band ran through song after song, from early material like 'Fight The Power' (at the crowd's insistence) through to brand new songs that got their live debut tonight. While the band seemed to have a few more sound issues they blasted through them with aplomb with Mark Le Gallez, as ever, being the consummate front man, leaping from the drums, rolling on the floor and at one point even springing onto one of the tables around the 'dancefloor'. Having built this level of momentum, hopefully Thee Jenerators can keep it up for their forthcoming shows as they are truly one of the most high energy and, above all, entertaining live acts on the island and should be a force to be reckoned with at Guernsey Live, even when up against big names from the UK. last updated: 21/04/2008 at 16:58 You are in: Guernsey > Unsigned Bands > Reviews > Thee Jenerators debut at the De La Rue |
