Could you be the Channel Island Idol?

The search for a Channel Island Idol is on - singers are being encouraged to take part in Liquid's competition for a chance to win cash and a session in a recording studio.

Budding pop stars will have the chance to be crowned 'Channel Island Idol' in a singing competition being run at Liquid Nightclub on Jersey’s Waterfront.

The overall ‘idol’ will win a day in a professional recording studio along with the opportunity to sing at an exclusive event in the UK, as well they'll walk away £250 richer. The winner of each heat will also find their wallet fattened with £50 cash.

The event consists of four heats and a grand final, with judges from JerseyEvents.com, Gallery Magazine and the Jersey Evening Post marking the contestants on both ability and audience reaction.

Richard Hughes, one of the organisers behind the event, believes that the competition offers “something different” for islanders and hopes that it will be a “great community event”.

He told BBC Jersey’s Carrie Cooper that they came up with the idea to run the competition “because there are some good singers out there” and this seems the perfect opportunity to showcase that talent, not forgetting the fact that “everyone likes to win prizes”.

Anyone interested in entering as a contestant (you have to be over 18) should call Liquid on 01534 789356, or keep an eye out for application forms in the club and Chicago Rock Bar.

The first heat takes place on Friday 24 November with the grand final just before Christmas on Friday 22 December.

Each event takes place in Liquid between 22:00 and 23:00 and it's completely free to watch.

Hi Dave, the text voting system is just one of the judging criteria. We have a panel of judges who we feel have good experience in the entertainment industry to make a good decission. We appreciate your comments and look forward to seeing you throughout the heats.

The idea is a good one, but the voting system, determined by text votes of the audience, leaves a lot to be desired, since the decision could be determined on whoever has the biggest entourage. There were three singers who might have been worthy winners on the first night, and none of them ultimately won. The winner did an OK version of 'Ironic', but it was a very static performance, and, in any event, 'Ironic' is a very easy song to sing. Unless and until Liquid find a more sound basis for assessing the performers, they are unlikely to find someone who is truly worthy of the prize of a day in the recording studio.

What do judges from Jersey Events, Gallery and the JEP really know about music? You should get people from Sounds workshop and good local bands, maybe even a music or singing teacher to judge, they might actually know what they're talking about.
