Brave souls getting ready for their Xmas Day dip

Xmas Day swims

A cold and dull Christmas Day didn't put off several hundred swimmers as they took part in the traditional Jersey dip into the sea.

It’s a  tradition on Christmas Day morning in Jersey for hundreds of people to brave the cold weather and seemingly even colder sea (not true) and 2006 proved no different.

Qouaisne Bay saw at least a hundred volunteers take to the sea, with hundreds more bravely looking on from the beach, along with a huge assortment of dogs brought along for the occasion. It was organised by Nigel and Andy from the Smugglers Inn.

Traditionally, the best attended is the annual plunge organised by the Jersey Swimming Club - its been a regular feature in the Jersey festive season calendar for more than a hundred years and some two hundred and fifty people entered the sea at Harve des Pas. There must have been at least six hundred watching.

The president of the Jersey Swimming Club told BBC Radio Jersey “it’s chilly conditions this morning, but nothing puts anyone off. Most of the swimmers are doing between thirty seconds to five minutes, but some are doing a lap of the pool.”

Did you get your feet wet on Christmas Day? Tell us about your experiences, and if you just watched, why didn’t you go in?? After all, the water was warmer than usual, at 10.2C.........
