Worcester Warriors shower in champagne!

Celebrating with a shower of champagne

We love the bubbly stuff

Apparently islanders drink 100 thousands bottles of champagne a year. Was it you?

There are several old sayings in Jersey that come up during most conversations if they go on long enough.

"We drink over 100,000 bottles per year in Jersey with a population of 90,000 so its one bottle per head - man, woman and child."

Martin Flageul, Victor Hugo Wines

There’s the one about the boat in the morning, the number nine bus and of course about Jersey being “50 thousand alcoholics clinging to a rock”.

Well, if we really are 50 thousands alcoholics clinging to a rock then we’re high class ones.

Martin Flageul the managing director of Victor Hugo wines says the island has a strong thirst for the bubbly stuff.

Champagne bottles

He told us "I think we could say in Jersey that we drink more per capita than anywhere else in the world. We drink over 100,000 bottles per year in Jersey with a population of 90,000 so its one bottle per head - man, woman and child."

This comes after concerns the cost of Champagne is set to increase.

Martin told BBC Radio Jersey that a quarter of their annual champagne sales come in the two month lead up to Christmas.

But could it be harder to get this year? There's a world shortage of champagne and this could be the last year it's so cheap

It's thought the growing asian market is responsible for the growing demand in champagne around the world.

Bit early in the day for champagne?

Jersey drinkers tend to favour Laurent-Perrier, but the world's favourite champagne is Moët Chandon.

Over to you

So are you a champagne drinker? Do you just drink it for celebrations or is every day a celebration for you?

Do you think champagne is a poncy drink full of pointless bubbles and that a can of lager does the job fine?

I can't think of a better drink than champagne (unless it is Bombay Saphire and schwepps full fat tonic!) I shall be drinking my own body weight of these over the next few days..... Happy Christmas All
