Chico performing at the lights ceremony

Where was the star?

In 2006 Chico turned on the Christmas lights – this year it was done a bit differently. Which was best?

Last year thousands of islanders packed the Charing Cross area and half of King Street to see X Factor star Chico perform and then turn on the Christmas lights.

The performer was brought over by Liquid Nightclub to perform at the venue but was also made available to turn on the islands lights.

This was all done at the launch of the annual Fête dé Noué festival.

The 2007 Fête dé Noué is set to be bigger than ever and includes the Ice Rink in a new location on the Parade Park.

This year’s festival was launched, as in 2007, with the switching on of the Christmas lights in town. However, unlike 2006 the lights weren’t turned on by a big name.

Hundreds of the island’s children from seven primary schools, joined by adults of all ages, took part in a lantern procession down King and Queen Street.

The procession was led by the Romanian brass band Fanfara and as the band moved along the route that section of lights was switched on.

So which was the best approach? Would you have preferred to have seen the lights switched on by a celebrity (either local or national), or was this more of a unique approach to turning on the Christmas lights?
