Stephen Bumfrey gets into a disco mood

Shiny Norfolk Disco Balls

Breakfast show host Stephen Bumfrey will slip into platform shoes and pop on a medallion for his stint as a DJ. He'll fill the airwaves with some of the best-loved hits from the '70s and '80s for special shows on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.

For some, the '70s and '80s never went away. For me, at the time, they couldn't disappear fast enough.

Perhaps it was the open neck shirts and hairy chests draped with medallions.

And as for the men, it might have been the dishevelled Kevin Keegan Afro hair dos, or a total disregard for sensible footwear. Or was it the music?

What was once the 'in scene' soon became the 'ob scene'. Crisp drum beats, strings, brass and tight harmonies floundered clumsily and cheesily to make way for the electro dance and grubby grunge of the '90s.

And let's face it, the big carefree hits of the decade's first summer were superb – in a tank fly, boss walk, jam nitty gritty sort of a way.

But as pioneering as they thought they were, the music makers and their record-buying public, would soon begin to pine for the feel-good fromage of a somewhat more innocent time.

Disco hadn't died – no! It was simply off combing its hair and resoling its platform shoes.

And who doesn't remember tripping up on a Saturday night and not hitting the floor until Monday morning?

Here in 2007/2008, it's clear there is and probably always will be a genuine fondness for the glittering legacy embossed upon the charts of days gone by.

Earth Wind And Fire, The Bee Gees, Tavares, Chic, Sister Sledge, Rose Royce and The Real Thing now sit comfortably on any MP3 player alongside more recent beats.

Hear the phattest floor fillers from the past 30 years on Shiny Norfolk Disco Balls. DJ Bumster is in da house between 12 noon and 2pm on Christmas Day, and 10am and 1pm on New Year's Eve. Turn it on, crank it up and check it out!
