Under 16's Boys Madison Cup 1st Round/Quarter Finals, 19/11/2006 A sensational hat-trick from defensive midfielder Dan gave Celtic a well deserved passage through to the next round of the Madison Cup. Celtic turned up looking for revenge for their recent league defeat against their opponents, and hoping to recreate last seasons main cup heroics against the same team. The pitch was very boggy, and made football difficult for both sides, however both sides contributed to a high quality game of football. The game started with Sports having much of the early possesion, and started the game looking like the better side. The just rewards came soon after when a long range, well-struck effort for Tom crept into the bottom corner past the despairing dive of the goalkeeper. Pannal continued this pressure throughout the first forty minutes having a number of half-chances, including a point blank shot from Joel once more which rebounded off the startled keeper. Just before the interval, a looping Linfoot effort, which beat the Sports keeper was thwarted by Upton clearing off the line. After a inspirational team-talk from Matt, Celtic came out for the second half with all guns blazing. Celtic responded with a barrage of early pressure, keeping Sports camped deep in their own half. The introduction of Milsted around this point changed the game even more so. Soon this pressure paid when a ball laid off for Smith deflected off a Sports defender to loop over the stranded Gotts. Almost immediately from the restart Celtic's pressure once again paid off, when they won a corner. A pinpoint Milsted delivery was flicked on by Smith and after a scramble on the line the goal was counted and credited to Smith. Celtic continued to press on and were again rewarded by the third goal. A superb intelligent delivery by Milsted was converted by Duffy while the Pannal defence seemed to stand and admire after what seemed to be a communicational mix-up between Goalkeeper and Defence. Knaresborough continued to battle for everything with the forwards closing every chance down, with tireless work coming from Watson especially up top, Rimmer battling hard in the centre and Duffy providing some inspirational runs and all round class on the left. The fourth goal quickly followed. A inswinging corner from Milsted once more was flicked on by Duffy to Smith who span and finished from all of a yard for a typical poachers finish. Soon after a clearance from ex-Celtic player McFarlane rebounded off Duffy into the path of Watson to apply the inspired finish. Sports did reply with a few half chances which were thwarted by the defence, especially Tyreman and the outstanding Westernman who kept the usually unstoppable DiDomenico quiet throughout. Towards the end a free kick which was well struck by Boothroyd only to be acrobatically palmed wide by Hazlett to round off a truly excellent all round performance for Celtic. With performances like this the future looks good for Celtic.
