Cool campsites

Forget anoraks and gumboots and think alfresco dining and jamming round a campfire with your mates. Camping is now cool. We're on the hunt for North Yorkshire's best campsites and we want YOUR recommendations.

Luckily for us, North Yorkshire was MADE for camping. The question staring us modern happy campers in the face, is where are NY’s hot camping spots?

First things first, what qualifies a campsite as hip? Is it the location? The facilities, or lack of them? The truth, as all clever campers know, is that no single quality makes a campsite cool.

It could be the fact that you can buy a farmhouse breakfast, or that babies are welcome or that sheep nibble the grass on the other side of the fence next to your tent.

We want YOUR recommendations for great campsites. We’ll then check them out, and if they make the grade, we’ll add them to this page.

Cool campsites

Robin Hood’s Bay - Hook House Farm
This quaint campsite’s sloping field means you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Robin Hood’s Bay from the moment you unzip your tent. A stumble across the footpath takes you directly into the village, where you can sample real ales and Whitby scampi. When I went it was a very quiet site with showers and a kitchen. Not the place to go for a rowdy stag weekend!

Goathland – La Rosa
Before camping puritans start harassing us, this isn’t strictly a campsite, in that you don’t take your own tent. Instead you stay in one of La Rosa’s fab vintage vans. The 20 acre site is a homage to everything kitsch and cool. The Top Field area has a shared dining tent complete with dressing up rail…

Appletreewick - Masons Camping Site
If you like things simple, this beautiful riverside campsite is for you! There's not much in the way of 'facilities' on this site - basic but clean toilets and showers, an electric hook up and somewhere to do the washing up. And the nearest shop is in Burnsall, which is a mile and a half walk down river. But there's a lovely pub over the road, which serves hot food, and plenty of hills for walking off your lunch!
