Review
by Sam Abercromby
The
historic venue of the Oxford Apollo is not usually connected with
a man who has been banned from most stages, but that is what happened
when Roy "Chubby" Brown performed for one night only
on Friday.
The theatre was packed to almost full capacity by a mixture of
loyal fans and people curious to see "the rudest and crudest"
comedian in Britain.
Beer
flowed easily and people seemed in good spirits.
We
werent disappointed when "The Helmet" erupted
onto the stage in a manner more befitting a pro boxer.
After
being blasted by the sound of The Prodigy, the theatre rang out
in chorus to welcome him on, with words I cant repeat here.
Despite recovering from an aggressive cancer of the vocal chord
he started full of energy and for a comedian renowned for being
bluer than a frozen Smurf he certainly lived up to expectation.
No one was safe from his mouth as he raced through many topical
issues in traditional bad taste, ranging from Iraq to Pop Idol.
He also managed to add his own brand of humour to several well-known
songs, which he invited us to sing along with.
The
ticket warned, "If easily offended please stay away,"
and this was sound advice.
I
managed to count two clean jokes throughout the entire act
it certainly wasnt a family show.
Despite the energy his voice was still slightly strained from
his operation, and at a few points the act slowed a little, but
it didnt detract from the overall performance.
After
a 70-minute set he finished in very much the manner in which he
came in, with deafening applause from the audience, myself included.
If you like your comedy extremely crude but still very funny,
and youre not easily offended, then I would certainly recommend
seeing Chubby next time hes around.
