Every
good panto needs a good villain and not for the first time, Clive
Hayward will face the boos and hisses in Oxford.
He
plays Malice, who's sent down by the giant to collect taxes from the
villagers in Jack And The Beanstalk.
"If there aren't taxes Malice collects food, and if there's no
food he takes villagers for the giant to eat. He's a nasty piece of
work," explains Clive, who's in his fourth panto at The Playhouse.

He's
also played the villain
in Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty and reckons he knows what it takes
to bring out the best in the bad guy.
"You
need lots of overacting, speak
in a scary voice and put on lots of make-up.
Plus they always say the baddie has the best lines and in this case
he does."
Bad guys aside, pantos are also about audience participation, lots
of laughs and a happy ending.
All of these elements are in Jack And The Beanstalk, plus one or
two surprises to spice up the tale about a young boy, Jack, who
trades in a cow for some magic beans.
"It's
a really good story which works well on stage. The
twists and spins keep the audience on their toes," says Clive.
This is the tenth year of panto at T
the
Playhouse and Clive believes its enduring popularity can be put
down to good script writing and value for money.
"It's a great family day out. We've
had great fun in rehearsals and that comes across in the show. I
think if the cast is having fun the audience will too."
