This week, Zakia marks Notting Hill Carnival with a hazy, echo-drenched journey through the music and diasporas that have shaped its sound. From the waltzing Trinidadian calypso of Lionel Belasco, to classic dub and roots reggae from Augustus Pablo, Bunny Wailer, Jennifer Lara and Dennis Bovell’s soundtrack to the cult film Babylon. Plus, music that carries sound system culture into new territory: ZENA & SLICKnBOBBY exploring connections between Ethiopia and Jamaica, Tafi All Stars giving traditional Ghanaian rhythms the dub treatment, and Lokkhi Terra & Shikor Bangladesh Allstars bringing Baul folk music into dialogue with reggae.
