Money Box Live: Veterans' Finances
How much of a financial shock is leaving the armed forces and what help is there?
Around 13,000 people left the armed forces last year, which means changing not only their way of life but also the way they manage their money. For years things like accommodation and bills can be managed for service personnel, so adjusting to the finances of civilian life might be a shock for some.
In this episode we look at what support is available if a military career is cut short through injury and what happens to your pension if you have to leave earlier than intended. Also on the programme, why hundreds of veterans have been told they need to pay thousands of pounds of their forces pension back.
Felicity Hannah is joined by Ann Griffiths, Head of Policy and Research at the Royal British Legion and Major General Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the Forces Pension Society, which acts as a pension watchdog for the military community.
