Launde Abbey (Part Two): The Cromwell Connection

Since the 1100s Launde Abbey was an Augustinian priory. But in the 1500s, at the dissolution of the monasteries, Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s chief minister, bought Launde for £1500.

After visiting the priory in April 1540, he wrote in his personal journal “Myself for Launde.”

The chapel at Launde holds clues to what happened next.
