For a new BBC Podcast 'Trouble at the Bottom: Sheffield FC' we spent a year with the oldest football club in the world.
Sheffield FC's place in football history is unique. The club helped shape many of the rules of the modern game, hosted the first football derby and is one of only two clubs to have received FIFA's Order of Merit, alongside Real Madrid.
But while its history is remarkable, this is very much a story about the present day. Sheffield FC currently plays in the ninth tier of English football and faces many of the challenges familiar to clubs across the country: balancing ambition with limited resources, serving its local community and trying to build a sustainable future.
