Linton Stephens presents an afternoon of great performances from the UK and beyond. A focus on conductors this week begins with the acclaimed Hong Kong born conductor Elim Chan. She is music-director designate of the San Francisco Symphony but today you can catch her directing the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Gabriela Montero's 'Latin Concerto' with the composer herself at the piano, given today as part of Radio 3's 'Piano Mondays'. And staying with the piano, Linton takes us to New Ross, in County Wexford, Ireland, for the New Ross Piano Festival where the internationally acclaimed pianist Markus Groh performs music by Beethoven. But we begin Live from Wigmore Hall with a recital of music for winds from the Orsino Ensemble, featuring some of today's major league wind-players Samuel Barber Summer Music Mark Simpson The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows (UK première) Carl Nielsen Wind Quintet Introduced for Classical Live by Petroc Trelawney ************************************************* Gabriela Montero Concerto No 1 ‘Latin Concerto’ Gabriela Montero (piano) BBC Symphony Orchestra Elim Chan (conductor) Zoltan Kodaly Dances from Galanta BBC Philharmonic Anja Bihlmaier (conductor) New Ross Piano Festival: Ludwig van Beethoven Bagatelle in C major, Allegretto, WoO 56 Bagatelle in A minor (For Elise) Bagatelle in B-flat major, WoO 60 Allegretto in B minor, WoO 61 Markus Groh (piano) New Ross Piano Festival: Max Bruch Eight Pieces for clarinet Robert Plane (clarinet) Rachel Roberts (viola) Anna Fedorova (piano)
