1. Coming up on Bases Covered Livepublished at 21:39 BST 13 September

So a win for the Yankees that takes them even closer to the play-offs, and we are at that time of the season where everything is being decided.

Next weekend is the penultimate weekend of the regular season and we will have the Boston Red Sox trip to the Tampa Bay Rays live from 18:30 BST.

    We will see you then.

  2. YANKEES WIN!published at 21:21 BST 13 September

The Yankees hold on to see off their city rivals, taking the game 2-0 and winning the series as a result.

Those early home runs from Ben Rice and Austin Wells were enough for the Yankees but the victory was built on the back of a pitching masterclass from Cam Schlittler.

The Yankees are even closer to the post-season while the Mets just cannot wait for the season to be over.

It's now or never for the Mets as we get ready for the ninth inning.

Can they finally find something after a tough day in the Bronx?

I am a Rays fan currently watching them beating the Astros. Hoping the Yankees lose to open the gap a little more at the top of the division.

    Mark, Bedford

As things stand the Yankees are not losing, but the results elsewhere are not going as they would like. On top of the Rays leading the Houston Astros 11-2, the Blue Jays are now 4-1 up against the Baltimore Orioles in Toronto and the Cleveland Guardians lead 6-1 against the Minnesota Twins. That means as things stand the Yankees will not confirm they post-season berth today, even with a win.

  6. Pitching change for Yankeespublished at 20:40 BST 13 September

Perhaps unsurprisingly Cam Schlittler is done for the day after getting hit with that ball at the end of the last inning.

Brent Headrick is his replacement but a good day out for Schlittler as he gets through six innings without giving up a run. He has put the Yankees where they need to be.

Surely a more accurate Premier League analogy is that the Mets are more like Spurs (splashed loads of cash on players but can't buy a goal/run) and the Yankees Arsenal? I say this as a Mets and Spurs fan. #basescovered

  8. Cam Schlittler dominant for the Yankeespublished at 20:25 BST 13 September

This has been an impressive outing so far for Cam Schlittler as he aims to do his bit in seeing out a 14th win of the season for his team.

He's given up just one hit after 83 pitchers so far as he works his way into the sixth inning with a strikeout of Francisco Lindor.

But at the end of the inning he is caught by a line drive smashed straight back at him by Bo Bichette. We'll see if he comes out for the seventh inning.

Aren't the Mets and the Yankees in different leagues? How does that work?

    Al, Dorking

They are Al. The Yankees play in the American League and the Mets in the National League. But sides from each league meet throughout the regular season, with certain local rivals playing extra matches against one another. As a result, this is the sixth meeting between the Mets and Yankees in 2026.

  10. Home run!published at 19:40 BST 13 September

The Yankees double their lead with a second home run of the afternoon.

Austin Wells jumps on the first pitch of the third inning and arrows a fly ball to right field.

It's up into the second deck and the Yankees lead 2-0 in the Bronx.

  11. Home run!published at 19:09 BST 13 September

    Perfect start for the Yankees!

Ben Rice steps to the plate and launches a home run to right field to the joy of the home crowd.

That's his 38th home run of the season.

Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger celebrate against the New York Mets.

The Yankees won the opening game of the series on Friday night after a special pre-game commemoration on the anniversary of September 11th.

An early home run by Cody Bellinger put the Yankees in control and, despite a late rally by the Mets, the home team held on for a 6-4 win.

The Mets got their revenge on Saturday with Francisco Lindor launching a grand slam home run in the eighth inning as they cruised to a 12-2 win to level up the series.

But the Yankees can have the last laugh today because if they beat their city rivals and the Toronto Blue Jays lose at home to the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees will confirm their place in the play-offs.

If there was any more motivation needed for either side, that might just provide it.

And welcome to a very important weekend in the city.

MLB Bases Covered Live is at Yankee Stadium this afternoon on what has already been a poignant weekend for New Yorkers with the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks being commemorated throughout the city and by both of its baseball giants.

The New York Mets and New York Yankees have shared the spoils with a win each so far in this Subway Series and are set for a high-stakes decider that could see the Yankees secure a post-season berth.

In recent times there have been few Subway Series as relevant as this one - both on and off the field.
