Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle claimed his first Premier League victory with goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa at Tottenham Hotspur - who lost their second league game this season.

There had not been a goalless draw between these clubs since the top flight was rebranded as the Premier League in 1992, and Elanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute.

New signing Nico Gonzalez, making his Magpies debut following his £52m move from Manchester City, started the move with a superb crossfield pass to Amar Dedic who headed the ball into Elanga's path.

The Swede, who also scored in the Magpies' 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, created space away from ex-Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, spun and shot at goal, with the ball going in off the post.

Newcastle doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Wissa acrobatically hooked the ball into the net after Nick Woltemade headed a corner towards the striker.

Tottenham striker Omar Marmoush, making his debut on loan from Manchester City, had one of the best chances when it was 0-0, but from the side of the six-yard box could only sidefoot wide unmarked.

Italy midfielder Tonali played against Newcastle for the first time since becoming Spurs' record signing in a £100m move in the summer after three years with the Magpies.

He was booed relentlessly by the away supporters, who took great delight in waving him off the pitch when he was substituted for Dominic Solanke with Newcastle 2-0 up.

The three points lifts Newcastle fourth in the table, while Tottenham are yet to score a league goal this season and are bottom.

Spurs have finished 17th in the Premier League the past two seasons, staying up on the final day of 2025-26.

But hopes were high for a much-improved campaign after manager Roberto de Zerbi spent over £300m in the summer.

Yet, after an awful performance in the 3-0 loss at Brentford last week, Tottenham followed that up with another defeat, thousands of fans leaving the ground before the final whistle.

Winger Savio, known as Savinho while at Manchester City before his £75m summer move, had made an impressive debut, scoring in the midweek 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over Charlton, but was ruled out because of what De Zerbi called "muscle fatigue".

Striker Richarlison and midfielder James Maddison were also not included, but De Zerbi will be worried by the amount of chances Spurs missed, while they also conceded goals to both shots on target that Newcastle registered.

Marmoush should have hit the target but volleyed wide in the first half, and also fired wide after a bright run from the halfway line, and later had an effort comfortably saved by Lukas Hornicek.

Pedro Porro, playing in a more advanced position than normal at right wing had a number of opportunities, but had one shot blocked by a sliding Lewis Miley and another effort tipped over.

Substitute Dominic Solanke flicked the ball goalwards late on, only for Lewis Hall to clear off the line on another frustrating evening.

Spurs have now only won three of their past 23 home league games. Any pre-season optimism has gone.

Newcastle fans may well have found themselves in the opposite position to Spurs supporters before the campaign had started - fearful of what was coming.

Tonali was one of three key departures from St James' Park, along with captain Bruno Guimaraes, who went to Arsenal for £85m this month, and England winger Anthony Gordon after his £69m move to Barcelona.

Manager Eddie Howe left on 31 July after nearly five successful years, which included guiding the Magpies to their first domestic trophy in 70 years with victory in the 2025 Carabao Cup.

German Jaissle, 38, was named as his replacement after managing at Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia - with no experience of English football.

But his first three games have provided Newcastle's fans with a lot of hope.

They nearly beat 2024-25 champions Liverpool, only to concede a penalty in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time to draw 2-2, before beating Championship side West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the Carabao Cup second round.

"It is a good start - we are really, really proud," said Jaissle after his side's victory in London.

Gonzalez was booked only 12 minutes into his debut, but then impressed with a superb 30-yard pass to play a pivotal part in Newcastle's first goal.

But they had created earlier chances and nearly scored twice in the opening 10 minutes, only for Elanga and Harvey Barnes to squander opportunities.

Newcastle also started the second half well with Hall shooting over and Elanga taking the ball around home goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, before being forced wide.

Further encouragement for the Magpies comes with Wissa's first league goal since 30 December in a 3-1 win at Burnley.

Wissa scored 19 Premier League goals for Brentford in 2024-25 to earn himself a £55m move to the Magpies, though an injury-ravaged campaign meant he only made 19 league appearances in 2025-26, including four starts.

He took his overhead goal superbly to complete a fantastic day for his club.
