Bradford City caused an upset by dumping Burnley out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

Both sides spurned presentable chances to win the game inside 90 minutes, but with nothing separating them, it came down to a penalty shootout in front of 20,000 fans at a lively Valley Parade.

Adam Phillips struck the winning penalty for the Bantams after Switzerland international Zeki Amdouni had hit the post for Burnley and Jacob Bruun Larsen's effort was saved by Jon McCracken.

Bradford, who are the early pacesetters in League One and have yet to concede a goal so far this season, will visit Leyton Orient in the third round after the draw was made following Wednesday's matches.

Meanwhile, Burnley's wait for a first win in normal time under new boss Nicky Hayen goes on, having required penalties to beat Notts County in the first round and still without a victory in the Championship.

The night had started with relative optimism for the visitors, who dominated the first half despite Hayen making nine changes from Sunday's defeat at West Bromwich Albion.

Burnley skipper Connor Roberts had a curling effort from just inside the area tipped over by McCracken and Amdouni twice went close, as did Mike Tresor.

Shortly before half-time, Phillips almost scored directly from a corner for Bradford but his low delivery bounced out off the near post.

Bradford grew into the game in the second half as Burnley's passing became disjointed. Phillips struck a powerful effort from 20 yards to force Burnley debutant goalkeeper Gregoire Coudert into an unorthodox save, while Will Swan's curling effort was deflected behind.

But Burnley still had plenty of opportunities of their own at the other end, none more so than when Armando Broja skewed well wide from the angle after he had been slipped in by Josh Laurent.

McCracken made two vital saves late on, denying Tresor low down to his right before beating away Laurent's sharp effort from 12 yards out in stoppage time.

And it was McCracken who was the hero in the shootout to thwart Bruun Larsen as Bradford converted all four of their penalties to maintain their perfect start to the season and heap more early pressure on Burnley following their relegation from the Premier League.
